Star Trek: The Parallel Generation (TPG)
Author¹s Preface
The stories presented under this title are not pretending to be in the
Star Trek canon of TNG, DS9, and Voyager. However, the characters will be
the TNG characters and they will be on the Enterprise. The uncanonical
nature of this series is a necessity for the author since he is not a
scholar of the television show and has not seen most of the episodes more
than once. If anyone wishes to serve as technical advisor, direction and
information would be welcome.
The premise for TPG does however come out of the Star Trek canon and its
imaginative presentation of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum
mechanics. The action of TPG takes place in a ³parallel² universe which
³split off² from the Star Trek canonical universe at the end of
³Generations,² the TNG movie. This arrangement has the advantage that the
author will not be actively seeking to rework the series as it happened on
television and this series will not be negated (since it will be ignored)
by any future TNG films. The Enterprise-E has been built and is out
amongst the stars when TPG begins.
TPG will be written as a serial and the author promises to keep the parts
short so that they may be conveniently read in five minutes or so. This
is done in consideration of the fact that the author himself does not have
much more than fifteen minutes on any given day to spend with
alt.startrek.creative.
The author has seen disclaimers about ownership of TNG characters in other
posts to this newsgroup. He is not sure if this is necessary, given the
nature of this form of entertainment. Render unto Paramount what is
Paramount¹s and let the common Star Trek fan have their fun!
So without further prologeum or apology Zen Adams presents Star Trek: The
Parallel Generation.
TPG001 ³The Final Commission² PART 1
by Zen Adams
Will Riker starred in stunned disbelief at the blank comscreen before
him. He had just come off bridge duty and was readying himself for bed
when he had received a subspace communication from Earth, Starfleet
Command. The message was from Admiral Klein who commended Riker on his
outstanding service record and announced with great enthusiasm that Riker
was being offered command of a new ship, the USS Texas.
The Texas was the latest galaxy class starship to come out of Utopia
Planitia. It would be commissioned in one month with its first cruise
scheduled the same week of its commissioning. Riker knew that it was the
most attractive post that Starfleet had to offer a new captain. How could
he possibly turn this one down?
The door chime to Riker¹s quarters beeped.
³Come.² Said Riker snapping out of his daze.
The door slid open. Captain Jean-Luc Picard stood smiling in the door
way. ³Congratulations, Will.² He stepped into the room and the door
closed smoothly behind him.
³Captain.² Riker stood up and pulled his robe sting to tighten it. ³Thank you.²
³I don¹t want any of this nonsense about you turning down this command and
staying on the Enterprise. The Texas will be a great ship.²
³This appointment is a bit of surprise, Captain. I hadn¹t really planned
on leaving the Enterprise at this time.²
The Captain frowned. ³Will. Your time has come. You have to take this
commission. You can¹t spend the rest of your life as first officer on the
Enterprise. Besides it looks bad. I will have a hard time getting first
officers if word gets out that my Number One never gets his own ship.²
³I realize that.²
³If you are thinking that I am going to die sometime soon and you are
going to step into my command, you can just forget it.² Picard laughed.
Riker smiled. He knew Picard was right. He had begun to regret some time
back turning down the last commission he was offered. How many chances
would Starfleet give him before they decided he was afraid of taking
command of his own ship?
³I will accept the promotion and the commission. I suppose it¹s about
time I became a Captain. I didn¹t enter Starfleet to be a career
commander. Besides from the specs I¹ve seen of the Texas, she¹s more
advanced than the Enterprise.²
³Advanced technology is not what makes a great ship, Will. It¹s the
excellence of her crew. You¹ve been a damn fine officer, Will, and you¹ll
make a damn fine captain.²
³Thank you, sir.²
Picard extended his hand to Riker. ³It has been a pleasure having you as
my Number One.²
Riker smiled and shook Picard¹s hand. ³It¹s been an honor serving with
you, Jean-Luc.² A thoughtful pause ensued as the two men stood facing
eachother. ³So when are you going to push for an admiralcy?²
³What? You must be joking. I wouldn¹t take an administrative position.²
³The Enterprise is supposed to be the Flagship. You could have your
office on board.² Riker had put the ball into Picard¹s court.
Picard dodged. ³Well, I suspect you will probably want to get some rest.²
³Actually, after this news, I don¹t know if I can sleep.²
³How about coming down to Ten Forward? We can announce your promotion to
the crew.² suggested Picard
³Alright. Give me a few minutes to get changed.²
³Right. See you there.² Picard turns and leaves.
Riker was still trying to come to grips with the changes which were
heading his direction. He knew he was command material, but the
Enterprise was like home to him and its crew, his family.

Star Trek:The Parallel Generation
TPG002 ³The Final Commission² Part 2
by Zen Adams
TEN FORWARD
Riker entered Ten Forward and immediately was greeted by cheers and
applause from the crew members who had come to congratulate him on his new
commission as captain of the new galaxy class starship Texas. All of the
senior staff was there except for Deanna Troi who had accepted another
assignment during the construction of the Enterprise-E.
³Well, don¹t everyone look so happy that I¹m leaving.² said Riker.
³Congratulations Commander.² Data stepped forward and extended his hand to
Riker.
³I would imagine congratulations are in order for you, Data, since your in
line for my job.²
³That speculation is premature, Commander, since the Captain has not
spoken with me about such a change; however it is not...²
Geordi who has been standing at Data¹s elbow cuts in. ³You¹re next in
command, Data. You don¹t have to over analyze this one. Anyway,
congratulations, Commander.²
³Thanks, Geordi.² Riker looked around. ³I think I could use a drink too.²
³Certainly.² said Captain Picard, ³Guinan. This man needs a drink.²
THE BRIDGE
³Watch Officer¹s Log. Stardate 49126.1, Lieutenant Commander Denton
reporting. The Enterprise has been in orbit around a gas giant orbiting
the trianary star system SCNA4982. All science stations have been
collecting data on this system since this watch began. Seven probes have
been launched with experimental payloads to gather information unavailable
to our remote sensors. Science Officer Hiley is configuring a class
twelve planetary probe to aid in atmospheric studies of the gas giant.
Everyone is pretty excited about the discovery of a new planet.² Denton¹s
log entry was interrupted by the helmsman, Ensign Blake.
³Commander, the delta six probe has penetrated the magnetic field of the
inner most moon.²
³End log.² said Denton. ³Good. Is Hiley ready with his probe yet?²
³Lieutenant Hiley has indicated that his preparations will be complete
within the hour.² said a junior science officer at a station behind the
tactical post.
³Put the moon on the main viewer.² said Denton.
The volcanic moon instantly appeared on the viewer screen. Just at that
moment an eruption plume extended up from the surface and gracefully
stretched several kilometers in to space.
³Magnificent.² Denton never ceased to be amazed by the wonders of space.
Hiley step onto the bridge from the turbolift that had just arrived. He
paused to appreciate the display of nature¹s beauty on the main viewer in
front of him.
³What could be causing such an intense magnetic field?² asked Blake.
³Perhaps the convection of the material in the moon is some generating the
magnetic field. The high temperature of the moon¹s inner core might have
ionized a large amount of the atoms suspended in the magma.² Hiley walked
down the ramp and joined Denton behind the conn.
³So, is that probe ready?² asked Denton.
³Yes. Its loaded into tube six.² answered Hiley.
³Mr. Chodos. Prepare to launch the probe on Hiley¹s mark.² said Denton
turning to his tactical officer.
³Yes, sir.² Chodos began working with the panel in front of him. ³Ready, sir.²
³Return main viewer to the planet.² said Denton. The gas giant appeared
on the viewer slowly spinning below them.
³Commander. I am receiving a distress call.² Announced Communications
Officer Kaku.
Denton wheeled around, quickly walked up the ramp to the communication
station. ³What kind of message?² he asked.
³It¹s audio only.² Kaku said.
³Put it on.²
The message was broken up and faint. ³May day. We are under attack.
Requesting immediate assistance. Please any ship receiving this message,
respond immediately.²
³Who¹s under attack. What ship is that?²
Blake answered. ³It appears the signal has a Starfleet signature. Yes.
Got it. It¹s the Bardeen, sir.²
³What¹s the Bardeen¹s position?² asked Denton.
³They are six hours away at maximum warp.² said Blake. ³I have their
position. It¹s encoded into the distress signal.²
³The message was sent forty-two minutes ago, Commander.² said Kaku.
³I understand. This star survey will have to wait. Blake, lay in a
course for the Bardeen. Proceed there at warp eight.²
³Course laid in, sir.²
TEN FORWARD
³We¹re coming out of orbit, Captain.² The ever observant Data informed.
Picard tapped his communicator. ³Picard to Lieutenant Commander Denton.²
³This is Denton. I was going to inform you that I am responding to a
distress call issued by the Bardeen. She¹s under attack, sir.²
³Very good, Denton. Proceed. I will be on the bridge presently. Picard out.²
³According to Starfleet records, the Bardeen should be at Deep Space
Nine. This sector is more than two hundred light years from there. It
would have taken the Bardeen over nine weeks at their maximum warp to get
near here.² Data was always very informative.
³Well, regardless of how strange this may be we must still respond.
People¹s lives could be a stake. Riker, Warf, Data come with me to the
bridge.²
Everyone put down their drinks and returned to their duties. Riker, Data,
and Warf followed the Captain out of Ten Forward.
Guinan shook her head as she began to pick up after the departing
officers. ³Everybody¹s always rushing around.²
